Best Sander for Deck Refinishing: Belt vs Orbital vs Sheet
Refinishing a deck is one of the most common weekend warrior projects, and choosing the right sander makes the difference between a beautiful finish and hours of frustration. Belt sanders, random orbital sanders, and sheet sanders each have their place in deck refinishing — but which should you reach for first? We tested all three approaches on weathered cedar and pressure-treated pine decks to find out.

Sander Type Comparison for Decks
| Feature | Belt Sander | Random Orbital | Sheet Sander |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material Removal | Very fast | Medium | Slow |
| Finish Quality | Rough | Excellent | Good |
| Risk of Damage | High (gouging) | Low | Very low |
| Best Deck Task | Heavy stripping | General refinishing | Light smoothing |
| Price Range | $60-$180 | $50-$150 | $30-$80 |
Our Recommendation: Two-Step Approach
For most deck refinishing projects, we recommend a two-step approach: start with a belt sander (60-grit belt) to remove the old finish and grey, weathered wood fibers quickly. Then switch to a random orbital sander with 80-grit, followed by 120-grit, for a smooth final surface. This combination is dramatically faster than using an orbital sander alone, and produces a much better finish than a belt sander alone. The Makita 9403 belt sander and DeWalt DWE6421 orbital sander are our top picks for this workflow.

The belt sander tip for initial stripping was a game changer for my deck project. Followed up with the random orbital for a smooth finish.
